1810 Pompom Spencer

Apologies for not posting last week about my sewing progress - but I felt like I hadn't made any, so it was hardly worth a post. Was much more productive this week; I made most of an 1810s bonnet and finally finished the pompom spencer! I'm not going to the usual fall Regency event, so, since I don't know when I'll have an opportunity to actually wear it out, I got pictures of it this morning.

Which required getting up much earlier than I like. Be impressed with my dedication to this blog. :P

Let me explain; no, let me sum up...for those of you that for some reason haven't been hanging on my every word, here in this blog...

Construction details: Jumper and spencer made of dark navy wool, with bodice and spencer lined in linen. Shirt underneath of white linen. Long seams of jumper and shirt machine-sewn, then finished by hand, while spencer is sewn entirely by hand. Bonnet is a Timely Tresses pre-made frame, covered by me in cream figured silk taffeta, and trimmed with orange silk taffeta and pheasant feathers.

I made the shirt and the jumper, and made a rather pathetic start on the bonnet (just the top of the crown covered!) last fall, and made the rest of it this fall - so I could finally get it out of the UFO bin!

Oh, and the outfit itself is based on one in the V&A's collection. I didn't just dream up a crazy pompom dress on my own! The original has a line of pompoms on the skirt as well, but I want to be able to wear my jumper with other spencers, and thought a random line of pompoms on the skirt would look weird and out of place with, say, a plain plaid spencer...so I left them off.

  1. The pom poms are super fun and cute! I'm sure you're very excited to be done sewing them, though! Thanks for sharing pictures.

    1. Thank you! And oh, those pompoms were SO fiddly...it's a bit discouraging when a tiny line of trim takes you an hour and a half to sew! Glad I powered through, though, 'cause now I *do* think they're rather cute. :D

    2. Well you're definitely more dedicated than me... I usually update once a month or even less frequently than that. :D

    3. Well, everybody's got very different schedules! :) I just find that, if I don't have a regular posting day, I tend to completely neglect my poor blog! Trying to have a post every week keeps me on my toes.

      ...at least, in theory. Heh.
